Understanding Rhythm Patterns

So, here are those confounding rhythm exercises that we were doing the other night. Here’s your chance to get a jump on our next meeting by cheating.  I mean, practicing. 🙂

Each audio clip begins with a 1-bar drum beat identifying the tempo for you.  Then a piano plays the rhythm.  Remember to look first at what the time signature is for each track before you attempt it.  Track 1 you can see is in 4/4 time.  But they aren’t all in 4.

Have fun!

  1. Hmm? Don’t think so. Must be the wrong place….the wrong time…the wrong face….I feel a song coming on…..

  2. Sure! Familiarize yourself with the rhythmic notation by looking first, figure it out, clap it in tempo, etc. Then listen to the audio and see where you’re making mistakes. If you can, turn up the volume a bit and clap along with the audio track as you watch the notes. We’ll be going over these in class next Thursday.

  3. As George Michael so eloquently put it – ‘Never goin’ to dance again, addled brain has got no rhythm’……something to do with eye and hand coordination -I can’t catch balls either*

*George didn’t say that second bit – that’s me- exasperated at home! Miki

  4. Hello all,

Have missed Voice Works for 2 sessions now and worried that I will never catch up. I shall be trying out these exercises shortly.

And I hear your concert, Paul, with Martin Issep was wonderful and I missed that too.

Hey ho, let’s hope I get to our next session.

  5. Well, don’t worry Sheila – you’re not the only one who ‘missed the beat’ as it were!! I was fine on the first 5, but the next ones got me. I ‘understand’ what I’m supposed to do, but my brain doesn’t react fast enough to do it!! Jen x

  6. Yay! Improvement! That’s the name of the game, Sheila. Makes my heart feel glad. 🙂
Thanks for writing. I’m working on your enlargement project, as well.
